Weight Loss Surgery

For people suffering from morbid obesity, and facing the life-threatening side effects that can come with it, losing weight can be a matter of life and death. But for many, it can seem like there is no solution in sight — no diet plan, no exercise regimen, no "magic" pill that can help get the weight off and keep it off.

Piedmont's Bariatric Surgery Services — available in Atlanta, Augusta, Columbus, Macon, Newnan, Snellville and Walton — can offer an effective, proven and tested surgical solution for weight loss for obese patients. Bariatric surgery is the general term for several types of weight-loss surgery that involves reducing the size of the stomach or re-routing the small intestines to decrease the stomach’s ability to take in food. No matter the procedure, the net effects are similar - the amount of calories the body can absorb is limited and patients can drop the weight that is threatening their health.

We have bariatric programs throughout our system, specifically at the facilities below.

But a surgical weight loss solution means more than just a trip to the operating room. Piedmont's bariatric surgery program takes a personalized, comprehensive, team approach to every bariatric case. Led by fellowship-trained and board-certified bariatric surgeons, our team of physicians, nurses, nutritionists, fitness, and sleep experts will help you address all aspects of weight loss before and after surgery.

Am I a Candidate for Weight Loss Surgery?

If you are significantly overweight and ready to commit to a healthier lifestyle, you may be a candidate for weight-loss surgery at Piedmont Healthcare.

Current research supports bariatric surgery for individuals who meet the following criteria:

  • Have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 40
  • Have a BMI of over 35 and have medical problems, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or sleep apnea related to being overweight
  • In addition to the above, I have attempted weight-loss attempts in the past, but have been unable to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight for a sustained period of time.
  • How to calculate BMI: BMI = weight in pounds / [height in inches x height in inches] x 703.
