What Is Cardiovascular Technology?
Heart disease is the No. 1 killer affecting society today. But through early diagnosis and treatment, many people with heart disease can continue normal, active lives.
Cardiovascular technology allows physicians to detect and treat heart disease using cardiac and vascular procedures. Stents, balloons, high-energy sound waves, computerized imaging and other technologies serve to assist in cardiac care and provide you with a dynamic and exciting career opportunity. The demand for professionals to help with prevention and treatment is great.
About the Program
The Harry T. Harper Jr., M.D., School of Cardiac and Vascular Technology is a cooperative program where graduates receive a degree in cardiovascular technology. The program involves extensive training, including didactic and clinical instruction. The school has received accreditation for its three tracks, becoming the seventh such accredited school in the nation. It is also the first to offer two pathways toward a degree -- associate and bachelor.
In the first year, students attend academic classes. At the end of the first year, students select one of three specialties -- Cardiac Catheterization, Noninvasive Cardiology or Vascular Technology -- and spend the second year completing academic and clinical phases of that specialty.
Graduates take the exam given by the internationally recognized Cardiovascular Credentialing International/National Board for Cardiovascular Testing to become registered technologists. Passing this test provides graduates with a title that is in great demand by hospitals and medical centers across the nation.
