University Board Chair Receives Clemson University’s Highest Honor
AUGUSTA, Ga. – Feb. 28, 2008 – Randolph R. Smith, M.D., a plastic surgeon and chairman of the University Health Inc. Board, has been selected as a recipient of the Clemson University Alumni Association 2008 Distinguished Service Award.
A letter announcing the award was hand-delivered with no advance warning to Dr. Smith at his medical practice by two Clemson officials.
“What a magnificent honor,” Dr. Smith said. “I was completely caught off guard and moved to tears.”
The Distinguished Service Award is the highest honor bestowed by the Alumni Association, according to Executive Director Brian J. O’Rourke. Since 1960, nearly 250 Clemson graduates have received the honor.
“Today, we extend this honor to you, with deep appreciation for your service to our beloved institution, as well as the society at large,” stated the announcement letter, signed by Mr. O’Rourke. “Your many years of devotion to your alma mater, in addition to the impact you have made within your community toward your professional calling, make you a most worthy recipient of this recognition.”
Dr. Smith will receive his award formally at the annual Distinguished Award Service Banquet, scheduled for April 4.
Dr. Smith is most deserving, agreed J. Larry Read, President/CEO of University Health Care System. “Few physicians work longer and harder in support of their patients, this hospital and health care and medical education in this community. “I know that his alma mater means a great deal to him, so I’m thrilled that they have recognized him in this way.”
