University Hospital Honored Nationally by Thomson Reuters Benchmarking Organization

2008 Insight Awards Recognize Excellence at 13 U.S. Hospitals

Ann Arbor, MI May 14, 2008 – University Hospital in Augusta, Ga., was one of only 13 hospitals across the country honored today by the healthcare business of Thomson Reuters for excellence in performance improvement.

The honors were announced at the fourth annual presentation of the Insight Awards during the Thomson Reuters Healthcare Advantage Conference. They were given in four categories: clinical, operational, strategic planning and marketing, and overall performance. University was recognized under the Operational and Financial category.

“We are pleased to celebrate the success of these hospitals and to recognize their hard work and dedication to quality care and continuous improvement,” said Terry Cameron, executive vice president, Thomson Reuters. “Each of these hospitals has used Thomson Healthcare solutions to positively impact organizational efficiency, clinical quality, or strategic planning and marketing.”

University’s award was for the development and initial work of an internal Business Improvement Process (BIP) Team that evaluates departments and is committed to uncovering cost savings to the organization without staff reduction, and while maintaining or improving the high level of patient care that is the hospital’s standard.

“Business improvement efforts can be perceived negatively in an organization and many think there is a hidden agenda to reduce staff,” said Heidi Nelson, director of Performance Improvement, Patient Safety and Respiratory Care, and leader of the project. “The BIP Team at University has changed that perception and there are managers and directors who now want to be selected as a project team leader because they know they will be given support and even resources to effect the change. They have seen increased efficiencies and a reduction in operating expenses without negatively impacting the quality of care and there has NOT been a reduction in force.”

Three project leaders and the core steering committee met weekly and each project leader reported activities. All three departments learned from each other and could offer ideas and suggestions during the meetings. After the project leaders presented to the department directors as a group, many of the changes shared were quickly applied.

“Instead of using external consultants, University turned to the talented staff within our own walls,” Ms. Nelson said. “The BIP Team has not lost its enthusiasm. Even though it has been operational now for over eight months, the weekly meetings are ongoing. Each team continues to learn tools that might be applicable for them.”
