Daniel B. Sullivan M.D. Scholarships Awarded
Augusta, Ga. – Sept. 15, 2008 – Continuing the legacy of renowned cancer physician Daniel B. Sullivan, M.D., 20 health care workers were each awarded $1,000 scholarships this week from an endowment that bears his name.
Ten $1,000 scholarships were awarded to Medical College of Georgia students in the department of medicine. Ten $1,000 scholarships also were awarded to University Hospital clinical employees who are in school to advance their medical degrees. It was Dr. Sullivan's wish that funds generated through his endowment be used to help clinical students further their education to continue the legacy of the medical community that thrived under his leadership.
Dr. Sullivan was instrumental in founding the Harry W. Jernigan Cancer Center at University Hospital, St. Joseph Hospice and the Georgia Radiation Therapy Center at MCG. He served as chief of surgery for 17 years at University Hospital, where he focused on cancer surgery and research. Dr. Sullivan was 81 when he died in December 2005.
