Free University Screenings Help Find Skin Cancers
May 28, 2009 – Summer time is around the corner, which means plenty of time in the sun. In the heat of the summer sun, it’s often easy to forget about the dangers associated with the sun’s rays.
That’s why University Hospital holds annual free Skin Cancer/Melanoma Screenings.
On May 14, six dermatologists who practice at University Hospital screened 112 people who attended the free cancer screenings, which were held by appointment at University’s Breast Health Center.
Of the 112 people screened, 22 were recommended to have a biopsy and 25 were referred to a dermatologist. The following are a presumptive diagnosis of the 112 people screened:
- Seborrheic keratosis – 34
- Actinic keratosis – 30
- Basal cell carcinoma – 11
- Dysplastic nevus – 2
- Mole/Nevus - 26
