University Health Care System President Announces Retirement
Augusta, Ga. -- March 25, 2010 -- J. Larry Read, President/CEO of University Health Care System President, announced his retirement to the University Health Services Board of Trustees at their monthly meeting today.
Mr. Read, who has led the organization for 11 years, will remain with University through May.
“I believe I speak on behalf of the entire board when I say that it is truly with mixed emotions that we accept Mr. Read’s retirement announcement today,” said R. Lee Smith Jr., Chairman of the University Health Services Board. “I have never worked with anyone more committed to doing what is best for patients, this community and University Hospital.
“He has worked for years to leave the hospital and all its entities much better than he found them. We all know that he accomplished that and much more,” Mr. Smith continued. “He is a man of tremendous values and ethics, and it has been a tremendous honor to work with him and to call him a friend.”
Mr. Read thanked the Board and the management team for their support and hard work. He also thanked his Executive Assistant Carol Mills and his wife Anne, who attended the meeting.
“Our physicians and employees are among the most gifted in the country,” Mr. Read said. “We’ve asked them to get out of their comfort zones and they have. They are the reason this organization is thriving.”
Mr. Read joined University in January 1999, coming from the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla. Among his many accomplishments, Mr. Read oversaw the largest renovation and expansion project in the hospital’s history and brought a renewed focused to physician integration and patient care quality.
There will be a reception for Mr. and Mrs. Read in the hospital cafeteria, details of which will be announced later. Look for a story on Mr. Read’s service in an upcoming issue of Employee Communique.
It was also announced at the meeting that Jim Davis, Executive Vice President/COO of University Heath Services and Extended Care, will assume the position of University Health Care System President/CEO effective June 1.
“Mr. Read has been planning for this day for nearly three years,” Mr. Smith explained. “It is very important to him to leave this organization in the hands of someone capable of taking it into the future and making it even stronger.”
And that man is Mr. Davis.
“We have great confidence in Jim’s leadership and his commitment to keeping University Hospital patient-focused, innovative and financially strong,” Mr. Smith continued. “His experience and knowledge will allow for a seamless transition, and his vision will set the stage for a strong future.”
