Columbia County Kids Get a Head Start for School

AUGUSTA, GA (Aug. 3, 2010) – The start of the school year can be hectic for everyone – students, parents and teachers. That’s why the annual University Hospital Back-to-School Festival is a great place for Columbia County families to get back in the swing of the season.

More than 800 people attended the 11th annual festival, which was held July 31 at Evans Middle School and offered a wide variety of information of before- and after-school programs, college education planning and school bus safety. Clinicians also were on hand to provide immunization information and three-point screenings for pre-K and kindergarten pupils.

“The activity demonstrations really gave kids and their parents a taste of what’s out there in the Augusta community,” said Amy Johnston, festival coordinator. “There’s a lot of exciting classes for all age groups.”

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office was happy to note that they helped create identification cards for more than 300 children who were at the event. This is the most they’ve ever had at this festival.

The University Hospital Back-to-School Festival is sponsored by the Columbia County Board of Education, Columbia County Community and Leisure Services and the Columbia County News-Times.
