Event kicks off Smart Heart Month and features leading health
organizations collaborating for a healthier CSRA
University Health Care System will kickoff Smart Heart Month with University Health Care Foundation’s inaugural Cardio on the Canal event at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012 at The Salvation Army Kroc Center.
University Health Care Foundation President Laurie Ott said the event will feature The Boys & Girls Clubs, The Salvation Army Kroc Center, The Family Y and Augusta-Richmond County Public Schools.
“I am proud to announce that these organizations have all joined together to provide the leadership in kicking off Smart Heart Month,” Ott said. “The month of February has been known for several years as Heart Month to promote exercise, nutrition and heart disease awareness. We want to take it a step further and have a Smart Heart Month to ensure everyone has the knowledge to keep their heart healthy for a lifetime.”
Cardio on the Canal includes:
- Catch the Cardiologist contest for children 4 and younger
- A one-mile fun run for ages 5 to 10 years old
- A family walk for all ages along the canal
Events begin at 10 a.m. with the Cardio Kids warm up and the family walk starts at 11 a.m. In addition, University Hospital’s Mobile Heart Screening Unit, known as the Heart Cart, will be onsite providing screenings for people of all ages.
“We’re excitedly planning the full details of Cardio on the Canal and look forward to releasing more information as the day approaches,” Ott said. “The debut of the Heart Cart, and the public kickoff of Smart Heart Month combined with other events that day will make for the start of an exciting and healthy February.”
