Obstetrician Has Delivered More than 15,000 Babies
AUGUSTA, GA. (Feb. 26, 2010) The story of W.G. Watson, M.D., who is likely the oldest practicing physician in the United States, was revealed to a national audience today on CNN.com.
Dr. Watson, the namesake of University Hospital’s W.G. Watson, M.D., Women’s Center, celebrated his 100th birthday on Feb. 25 with about 700 patients, friends and family on the hospital’s front lawn.
He remains a driving force within the Women’s Center, where he has served as chairman of the hospital’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology since 1987. But more than that, Dr. Watson is a testament to the miracle of childbirth, having delivered more than 15,000 babies before giving up his obstetrical practice at age 85. Dr. Watson continues to care for gynecological patients through his office practice with Obstetrics and Gynecology Associates of Augusta.
Over his long career, Dr. Watson has strived to set an example of caring and service for patients, friends and colleagues. He still has no intention of retiring.
“I have three duties,” he said. “My work, which I will try to do as long as I can, my family, who I try to take care of, and my church and my community.”
