Smart Heart Expo Draws 1,000 Participants March 4, 2010

More than 1,000 attend University’s Smart Heart Expo

NORTH AUGUSTA, SC (Feb. 27, 2010) More than 1,000 people attended University Hospital’s free Smart Heart Expo on Saturday, Feb. 27, at the North Augusta Community Center. Of those who attended, more than 700 received screening results for blood pressure, blood sugar and a total lipid profile, which included total cholesterol, HDL, LDL and triglycerides.

During the day, participants were able to attend a number of educational classes on heart and vascular disease, including:

  • Aneurysms: The Silent Killer, by Houman Tamaddon, M.D., Vascular Surgeon
  • Heart Healthy Cooking, by Kim Beavers, diabetes educator and co-host of Eating Well with Kim on News 12's Midday program
  • Understanding Your Lipids
  • Benefits of Exercise
  • Reading Food Labels and Eating Out
  • Stress Management

Free activities included:

  • Blood sugar testing
  • Blood pressure screening
  • Total cholesterol
  • Body fat and BMI testing
  • Healthy heart information
  • One-on-one heart counseling
  • Special gifts and door prizes
