Warm Thoughts

The Volunteer Board of University Health:
Providing caring service for 60 years

The Volunteer Board celebrated its 60th anniversary in early 2009 – 60 years of service to the patients and staff of University Hospital.

Over the years, the Board has grown to more than 200 members, two-thirds of the active volunteer force at the hospital. Board members volunteer in more than 30 service areas throughout the hospital, and they have opened eight businesses to serve patients, their families and staff. The businesses are a means of fundraising for the Board, and all funds raised benefit the hospital through the purchase of needed equipment and funding of special projects.

In fall 2005, the Board pledged $550,000 to the hospital’s capital campaign to build the new Heart & Vascular Institute, the new outpatient center and to expand surgical services. The Institute opened in early 2009 and the Board has a presence in the new facility. Two businesses are located in the lobby: the New Moon Café and the Sunshine Express, a gift kiosk. Volunteers assist throughout the Institute in areas such as the Cardiopulmonary Rehab Center, the CVPACU (Open Heart and Vascular Surgery) Waiting Room and the Diabetes Center.

Other gifts to University Hospital in recent years have included glidescopes for the Open Heart Surgery area, monitors for 8NS, playground equipment for the Child Development Center and new exercise machines for Health Central and the Cardiopulmonary Gym. The Board has also begun sponsorship of the hospital's renewed Chaplaincy Internship program. A number of patient funds continue to be supported by the Board. The Board also opened a new gift shop in the Women’s Center: Celebrations!, which features items for new moms and babies. Other Volunteer Board businesses were updated and moved in mid-2008. The new Hair Salon and Uniform Shop locations are now on the second floor of the main hospital near the atrium. The main vending area on the first floor has been refurbished and a new, large vending area has been opened off the main lobby of the HVI.

Volunteer services is expanding as the hospital’s service areas do, with volunteers assisting in the new Outpatient Center, which opened in summer of 2007. The opening of the new surgery waiting area in early 2008 saw major volunteer involvement as well. The Volunteer Board is proud of its history of service and is eager to meet the challenges of the future.
