Multimodal Pain Management Protocol

The Multimodal Pain Management Protocol is helping University Hospital total joint replacement patients return to activity sooner.

Our fellowship-trained Orthopedic Surgeons are the region's leaders in providing this innovative protocol, which includes a special combination of pain medications delivered in the Surgery Care Center prior to surgery.  These medications are tailored to work with the body's five pain receptors to help reduce pain after surgery, which allows patients to get back on their feet faster.  During surgery, the physician will bath the joint in another solution, which also is designed to reduce postoperative pain. Through these methods and continued interventions with the dedicated nursing staff on the surgical unit, pain is controlled to allow patients to increase their ability to move, achieve good range of motion and to work with physical therapists.

Since its introduction in 2009, the Multimodal Pain Management Protocol has proven very beneficial for total joint replacement patients, reducing their average length of stay in the hospital by about a day. The goal is to help patients recover faster and get back to doing the things they love.

University has a multidisciplinary team dedicated to assisting you around the clock and providing help when patients need it. In addition to physicians and nurses, the multidisciplinary team includes Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Case Managers and the Orthopedic Program Coordinator.
