Outcome of Care

At University Health Care System, patients are our priority, and we take pride in the care we provide. To monitor the quality of that care, we track specific quality measures and compare them to benchmark measures at local levels. We publish these quality measures so you can draw your own conclusions regarding your health care choices. Our comparison numbers are from Hospital Compare, an online tool provided by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. For additional detailed information select the "click for details" buttons on the left. The data used in these tables is from July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2012 (except where noted) and are produced from Medicare claims and enrollment data using sophisticated statistical modeling techniques that adjust for patient-level risk factors and account for the clustering of patients within hospitals.

Hospital Mortality (Death) Rates

What does this show you? One way to tell whether a hospital is doing a good job is to find out whether patients admitted to the hospital have death (mortality) rates that are lower (better) than the U.S. National Rate, about the same as the U.S. National Rate, or higher (worse) than the U.S. National Rate, given how sick they were when they were admitted to the hospital. The information on this website shows how the 30-day risk-adjusted-rates for heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia at area hospitals compared to the U.S. National Rate.

"30-Day Mortality" is when patients die within 30 days of their admission to a hospital. Below, the death rates for each hospital are compared to the U.S. National Rate. The rates take into account how sick patients were before they were admitted to the hospital.

Hospital Readmission Rates

What does this show you? "Readmission" is when patients who have had a recent hospital stay need to go back into a hospital again. Medicare looks at how many patients need to be readmitted to the hospital within 30 days of their discharge. The information on this website tells you how area hospitals compare to the U.S. National Rate of Readmission for Heart Attack, Heart Failure and Pneumonia patients. Each hospital's rate of readmission is risk-adjusted, meaning it takes into account how sick patients were before they were admitted to the hospital for heart attack.
