Healthgrades objectively measures hospital quality based on the number of patients who experienced complications or died as a result of their procedure or treatment.
Healthgrades designates hospitals with 5-stars (better than expected), 3-stars (as expected), or 1-star (worse than expected) based on their performance in specific conditions and procedures. Your risk of complications and death from your treatment can be significantly lower at hospitals with a 5-star rating for the specific treatment.
If you need medical care in one of the procedures or conditions Healthgrades rate, consider a hospital with 5-stars for the specific care that you need.
If you need medical care in an area not listed, look at the ratings most relevant to your need. For example, if you have a heart problem, consider how the hospital rates in cardiac care overall.

Focus on the most important outcomes. In Fall 2013, Healthgrades removed the 180-day mortality rating. Healthgrades is placing more emphasis on patient outcomes that are most important to consumers (in-hospital mortality), and those that are consistent with national quality improvement efforts (mortality within 30 days of hospital admission).
