Brown & Radiology Associates and University Health Resources are pleased to present a new joint venture, the Evans Imaging Center. This new diagnostic imaging center is located in the newly constructed Professional Center 4 at the intersection of North Belair Road and Towne Centre Drive.
The Evans Imaging Center offers cutting-edge technology in the field of diagnostic radiology. This technology includes magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), ultrasound, digital mammography, digital x-ray and a picture archiving and communication system (PACS). The featured MRI unit is a high-field, open short-bore magnet from Siemens Medical. This MRI unit provides more detailed images of the body, which are obtained quicker than older units, while offering a more comfortable environment for the patient.
The CT unit is a Siemens 16 detector machine, which again means more detailed images and quicker scanning time. The ultrasound unit is capable of providing both 3D and 4D images, as well as color Doppler scanning.
The Evans Imaging Center also provides digital mammography. The system provides more detailed images and requires less scan time than traditional analog systems. In addition, physicians can zoom in or otherwise manipulate digital images that are not possible with film.
PACS Streamlines Productivity
The Evans Imaging Center also took a technological leap forward by installing a picture archiving and communication system (PACS). PACS digitally stores and maintain files, which allows radiologists to provide digital files via the Internet to referring physicians, diminishing the need for film-based prints of diagnostic images. This PACS ties directly into University Hospital's PACS, allowing both radiologists and referring physicians remote access to studies performed at both locations. PACS offers many advantages over film, including:

- Greatly reduces the need for repeat exams/x-rays

Siemens 1.5T MAGNETOM Espree
The Evans Imaging Center has installed the region's first open short-bore, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system that combines a larger opening for obese and claustrophobic patients with the ability to capture high-field quality diagnostic images.
Since two-thirds of American adults are overweight, the health-care industry is challenged to accommodate these larger patients with imaging systems that were designed for people who weigh much less. Currently, patients too large to fit inside the bore of a high-field MRI magnet have image studies done in open MRI systems with low-field magnets. This limits the diagnostic usefulness of the images obtained. The higher the field strength, the better the quality of images produced.
Claustrophobic patients present another challenge for MRI systems. They can be sedated, adding to their inconvenience and the time it takes to schedule and perform an exam.
This new MRI system features a bore opening of nearly 2.3 feet in diameter and almost one foot of free space between the patient's head and the magnet.
More than 60 percent of exams can be completed with the patient's head outside the bore, helping to ease claustrophobia.
