Heart, Vascular & Pulmonary

About

University Hospital offers the largest, most comprehensive medical staff in the area. Its team of more than 400 skilled physicians includes more cardiologists and cardiac surgeons than any area hospital.

Today, University operates the biggest, most innovative heart and vascular service in the area, complete with state-of-the-art diagnostics, a renowned open-heart surgery program and dedicated Stroke Unit.

The Area's Most Advanced Technology

These compassionate physicians continue a long tradition of "firsts." University developed the area's first cardiac catheterization program, performed the region's first minimally invasive mitral valve replacement surgery, performed the region's first angioplasty, and transplanted the first heart in Georgia. University also was the first hospital in Georgia to use drug-eluting stents and to operate a cardiopulmonary rehabilitation program of its size and scope. Our six cardiac catheterization labs are equipped with advanced technology, including two GE Innova 2000 All-digital Cardiovascular Imaging Systems and two GE 3100 All-Digital Cardiac-Peripheral Vascular Imaging Systems. These machines allow operators to zoom in on areas of interest, make adjustments for crisper, cleaner images and avoid the distortion of conventional X-rays so physicians can more accurately pinpoint the location and extent of clots or blockages. The result is more accurate diagnoses and more effective treatment plans.

A revolutionary step in the diagnosis of heart disease is University's 64-slice CT Scanner, the latest generation of CT technology. The 64-slice CT overcomes the movement of the heart and produces images that rival or outperform those gathered during cardiac catheterization. The noninvasive scans deliver clear, cross-sectional images of the heart muscle, valves and arteries. They help physicians determine if the walls of the arteries are lined with cholesterol or more advanced calcium-containing plaques. The scans also assist physicians in the following ways:

  • identifying with greater accuracy than ever before, plaque or cholesterol deposits that are prone to rupture and cause heart attacks
  • ruling out or discovering life-threatening tears in the aorta
  • accessing the arteries in the lungs

The 64-clice CT is the first technology that allows physicians to look at the coronary arteries, the lungs and the aorta all at the same time.

Chest Pain Accreditation from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care

University Hospital has received full Cycle V Accreditation with Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) from the Accreditation Review Committee of the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care. Formerly known as angioplasty, PCI encompasses procedures performed in the cardiac catheterization lab to unblock a clogged artery leading to the heart. University was the first hospital in the region to have the special PCI designation as well as the Cycle V accreditation.

The Chest Pain Center at University Hospital has demonstrated its expertise and commitment to quality patient care by meeting or exceeding a wide set of stringent criteria and completing on-site evaluations by a review team from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care.

Specialists in Electrophysiology and Pacemaker Calibration

One of University's cardiac catheterization labs is devoted exclusively to electrophysiology and pacemaker implantation. The lab is equipped with technology designed to diagnose or locate arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats), including special electrode catheters that can conduct electrical impulses to and from the heart, locate heart rhythm problems and record the heart's electrical signals. See University's Electrophysiology physicians.

One of the Nation's Top Vascular Labs

Technologists in University's Vascular Laboratory perform diagnostic testing of veins and arteries in the arms, legs, neck, head and abdomen. University's Vascular Laboratory is fully accredited in five areas of testing by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories - a status attained by fewer than 2 percent of vascular laboratories in the United States. This means the lab performs its studies according to strict national standards.

As baby boomers age, University will be ready to take care of their cardiovascular needs with the most extensive and experienced Cardiovascular Center in the region. See University's Vascular physicians.
