Lung Scan
Where do I register?
You may call 706.774.2125 to pre-register if you prefer. Please report to Central Registration in The Outpatient Center at your scheduled check-in time.
Where do I park?
Please park in the Outpatient Parking Lot off the main circle to the front entrance of the hospital. Inform the attendant at the gate when you enter the Outpatient Parking Lot if you need shuttle service. If you need wheelchair assistance, please park in the main hospital parking deck.
What is the test?
A lung scan is a special nuclear medicine X-ray used to detect blood clots or diminished blood flow in the lungs. The test is performed in two parts with each requiring the use of a radioactive "tracer" that will make any abnormalities more visible. The radioisotopes remain in the body temporarily until they are eliminated in urine or stool. This does not pose a danger to you or anyone else during this time.
You will have an IV inserted in your hand or lower arm in order to inject the radioactive "isotope." A series of X-rays will be taken to determine if there is adequate air and blood flow to the lungs.
Test preparation
There are no special preparations for the exam.
Special Considerations
Before the test, please:
- Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
- Tell your doctor if you have had an X-ray using barium or other contrast material within the last four days. Barium may interfere with test results.
- Bring any X-ray films from other facilities with you to the test. You must have a chest X-ray performed no more than 24 hours prior to the scan. If you do not have a chest X-ray or if it was performed more than 24 hours prior, a chest X-ray will be completed at the hospital prior to the scan.
