Where do I register?
You may call 706/774-2125 to pre-register if you prefer. Please report to registration on the Heart & Vascular Institute's first floor at your scheduled check-in time.
Where do I park?
Patients and visitors can park in the Heart & Vascular Institute's dedicated flat parking lot off St. Sebastian Way. If you need wheelchair assistance, please park in the main hospital parking deck.
What is the test?
A transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) is an ultrasound study to look at the structures of your heart. It is performed by a cardiologist who has received special training. He/she will ask you to swallow a small rubber ultrasound probe. You may have already had a surface echocardiogram at the hospital or in your physician's office. A TEE allows the cardiologist to get a clearer picture of the heart structures by looking at the back side of your heart through the esophagus.
You will have an IV inserted in your hand or arm prior to the TEE. The cardiologist will order a small amount of IV sedation to help you relax. You will not be put to sleep. For your comfort, a medicine will also be sprayed in the back of your throat to help numb it.
Do not eat or drink anything past midnight the night before your test. If you are having your TEE in the afternoon, your physician may allow you to have a clear liquid breakfast by 7 a.m. with nothing afterwards.
Your physician will inform you which of your home medications you should take prior to this test. If you are diabetic, please consult your physician about taking insulin or other medications to control your blood sugar.
Inform the physician and nurse assisting with your TEE if you have ever had any problems with sedation or if you have problems swallowing.
Because you will be receiving sedation for your TEE, you must have someone who can drive you home and stay with you for several hours afterwards. If this cannot be arranged, your physician may ask you to stay in the hospital for observation.
