Aiken, SC - The University of South Carolina Aiken and University Health Care System, Inc., signed a Memorandum of Understanding that outlined a formal collaboration between the two entities. Dr. Sandra J. Jordan, USC Aiken's Chancellor, and Jim Davis, CEO of University Health Care System, signed the agreement.

The USC Aiken Department of Biology and Geology, in cooperation with the University Health Care System, will soon be offering a new Bachelor of Science degree in Clinical Laboratory Science, explains Dr. Bill Jackson, Interim Dean of Sciences and Engineering and Chair, Department of Biology and Geology. Students in the program will complete their first three years towards the biology degree at USC Aiken, completing coursework that includes human anatomy, microbiology, cell biology, and immunology. The fourth and final year of the program will be conducted at University Hospital in Augusta, Ga. and will provide students with professional/clinical training using hands-on, practical applications to prepare them for careers as clinical laboratory science technologists. The program is expected to begin in the fall semester of 2016.

University Health Care System is pleased to be partnering with USC Aiken to provide clinical training to the next generation of caregivers, states Mr. Jim Davis, CEO of University Health Care System. The work done in a hospital's laboratory is critical to delivering the high-quality care that University is known for. We are excited to help students develop this critical expertise in order to serve patients into the future.
