What to Do to Prepare for Your Appointment

Where do I register?

Register at the Speech and Hearing Center for all services, except for Modified Barium Swallows and selected hearing tests -- pediatric Auditory Brain Stem Response (ABR) with sedation, adult ABR, Electronystagmography (ENG) and Electrocochleagraphy (ECHOG).

Report to the Speech and Hearing Center 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment time. The center consists of two buildings connected by a walkway on the corner of R.A. Blvd. (13th St.) and St. Sebastian Way. The entrance is on the backside of the second building from the corner.

If you are scheduled for one of the specialized tests listed above that are performed in the hospital, please report to Central Registration in the hospital's main lobby at least 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment time. This staff will assist and direct you to the area where your test will be performed.

Where do I park?

Patients registering in the Speech and Hearing Center can park in spaces available at the front entrance of the center. Patients registering in Central Registration can park in the Outpatient Parking Lot in the front of the hospital. The parking attendant and the registration staff will be happy to assist you if you require a wheelchair or have other special needs.

What procedures are performed?

Speech and language testing will be performed by a certified and licensed speech/language pathologist. Different standardized tests will be used to determine the problem and its severity, and recommendations will be made to help resolve or compensate for the problem. Voice and fluency (stuttering) testing is also performed with these same guidelines.

Swallow testing or Modified Barium Swallow studies are performed in Radiology. A patient does NOT need to be fasting before this study. You will be required to eat/drink different consistencies of food and liquid as tolerated.

Hearing Testing will be performed by a certified and licensed audiologist to determine the presence or absence of any hearing loss. Recommendations will be made if appropriate. Types of testing include hearing screenings, tympanometry, and diagnostic air, bone, and speech audiometry. Referrals are made when appropriate to otologists and ENTs.
