Structural Heart Program
Patients diagnosed with conditions that affect the heart or the heart's valves can depend on Piedmont Augusta's multi-disciplinary team in the Structural Heart Program to provide compassionate, expert care.
Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR): TAVR is a procedure for select patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis (narrowing of the aortic valve opening) who are not candidates for traditional open chest surgery or are high-risk operable candidates. TAVR is performed on a beating heart and does not require cardiopulmonary bypass. Approved in November 2011, Piedmont Augusta was the first and remains the only hospital in the region to offer this lifesaving procedure.
MitraClip for Severe Mitral Valve Regurgitation: This procedure is for patients who have been diagnosed with a leaky mitral valve, causing what is called mitral regurgitation. Patients who cannot tolerate traditional surgery may be candidates for a MitraClip, in which the mitral valve is accessed with a catheter guided through a vein in the leg to reach the heart.
LAAO Watchman Occlusion Device: This one-time procedure permanently implants a heart device to effectively reduce the risk of stroke for patients on long-term blood thinners due to atrial fibrillation.
Patent Foramen Ovale/Atrial-Septal Defect Closures: Patients with these congenital heart defects, or holes, can undergo a minimally invasive procedure with a closure device that is deployed via a catheter to essentially “plug” the hole.
