UHCS Purchases South Richmond Nursing Facility

AUGUSTA, GA. May 26, 2016 -- University Health Care System announced today that it has purchased Salem Nursing & Rehab Center of Augusta for $3.7 million.

The 213-bed skilled nursing facility, commonly known as Amara Healthcare and Rehabilitation, is located at 2021 Scott Road. The sale includes the building, equipment and land. No certificate of need is required for this transaction.

The facility will be leased to University Extended Care, Inc., University’s non-profit corporation that manages its other skilled nursing facilities, Kentwood and Westwood, along with Brandon Wilde Continuing Care Retirement Community. University is scheduled to assume operations of the facility on June 9, at the conclusion of the real estate closing.

James R. Davis, President and Chief Executive Officer of University Health Care System, described the purchase as a win-win for Amara’s patients and University.

“The availability of high-quality skilled nursing facilities is becoming increasingly important as our population ages and families look for assistance from providers they know and trust,” Mr. Davis said. “Purchasing an existing facility allows us to expand these services without Certificate of Need approval.”

The 108 employees will have the opportunity to be retained by University if they meet employment requirements.

“We look forward to extending our mission of improving the health of those we serve to these patients and their families,” Mr. Davis said.
