Discovering a breast lump can be a frightening experience. Although eight out of 10 lumps are not cancerous, every lump should be evaluated. Yearly mammograms are covered by Medicare and most insurance companies.
Please call your physician as soon as possible if you discover a lump. If you do not have a physician, call the Breast Health Center for assistance. We are here to get you on the right track.
Diagnosis begins with a clinical breast exam, which may be followed by diagnostic mammography, ultrasound or other imaging procedure. These procedures are performed in physicians' offices, the Breast Health Imaging Center and Piedmont Augusta's Radiology Department. The Breast Health Center can help you schedule the appropriate appointments.
Your physician may suggest a biopsy to assist in determining if a lump is cancerous. Although there are several different types of biopsies, all biopsies remove tissue samples for a pathologist to examine for the presence of cancer.
The Breast Health Center’s educational initiative is deeply rooted in our commitment to serve our community. Our breast health navigators offer one-on-one patient and family education, support and survivorship planning, as well as genetic counseling for hereditary breast cancer.
